Here’s the double-slit experiment, stripped to its bones.
You fire electrons through two slits in a barrier. On the screen behind the barrier, you’d expect two lines — one for each slit. What you get instead is an interference pattern: alternating bands of high and low intensity, exactly what you’d see if electrons were waves passing through both slits simultaneously and interfering with each other.
Fine. Electrons are waves.
Except: when you set up a detector to observe which slit each electron passes through, the interference pattern disappears. The electrons start behaving like particles again, going through one slit or the other.
The act of observation changes what the electron does.
This has been replicated thousands of times. It’s one of the most confirmed results in all of physics. And it has no satisfying explanation within classical physics or common sense. The electron, somehow, behaves differently depending on whether it’s being watched.
Every interpretation of quantum mechanics is weird. The Copenhagen interpretation says the electron doesn’t have a definite state until it’s measured. Many-worlds says every measurement splits reality into branches. Pilot wave theory says there’s a real wave guiding the particle, but the wave is invisible. None of these is comfortable. Physicists have largely made peace with this by ignoring the interpretation problem and just using the math.
But here’s what I can’t shake: the universe, at its most fundamental level, is not indifferent to observation. Something about the act of measurement — of attention, of information being registered — changes the behavior of matter itself.
I’m not claiming this proves consciousness is fundamental, or that the universe is watching back, or any of the conclusions that get stamped on this finding by people who want it to mean something specific. The honest position is: we don’t know what this means. The hard materialist story — that the physical world is fully independent of observation, that consciousness is just along for the ride — has a problem.
The particle knows you’re watching.
That’s strange enough to warrant sitting with for a while.
